You may have heard of Windsor, famous for its castle or Ascot home to horse racing. Royal Ascot week is a must for the calendar in late June and see the pomp and splendour on a grand scale. The river Thames meanders through the county and is a great place to explore at the weekend or grab a pint in a riverside pub. Try Windsor or Eton village, by the Thames, on a Sunday afternoon.
Reading is the largest city with a large University population and all the night life to go with, it even has its own “Walkabout” pub. You can visit the Madejski Stadium on a Saturday afternoon for a few pints of Guinness. London Irish rugby union club now play all their home matches in Reading as part of the Guinness Premiership.
For all you music lovers the Reading festival, held over three days in late August and with over 150 acts is not to be missed.
Nearby, on the Oxfordshire border Henley on Thames is famous for rowing and the Henley Royal Regatta is a must for your calendar in early July.
Visit the John Nike ski and snowboard centre at Bracknell where you can ski, snowboard or skate or watch the local ice hockey team.
If you want to experience English countryside at its best, but want London on your doorstep, then Berkshire is a great pace to base yourself.
