UK Home Office Changes Working Holiday Visa (May 2008)

Youth Mobility Visa – Tier 5

The Home Office has announced changes to the current Working Holidaymaker scheme.

It has published a Statement of Intent which gives information about the rules and regulations they propose for the visa. These may change when official criteria are announced.

From September/October this year, the Working Holidaymaker Visa will be replaced by the new Tier 5 visa known as the Youth Mobility Scheme visa.

When the Tier 5 - youth mobility scheme is introduced, the working holidaymakers scheme will close to new applications.

Eligibility:

In order to obtain a Youth Mobility Scheme visa, applicants will need to accrue a minimum of 50 points.

  • 30 points for a sponsorship certificate from the applicant’s home country, (Australian and New Zealand citizens are likely to be exempt due to the reciprocal scheme for young British people.)
  • 10 points for being aged between 18 and 30 years
  • 10 points for having £1600 in the bank. ($3500)
  • Existing working holiday makers (or previous UK working holiday visa holders) cannot switch to, or apply for, the UK Youth Mobility Visa.

Validity

Youth Mobility Scheme visa holders will be allowed to stay in the U.K. for 2 years and work in any lawful job for the FULL 2 YEARS.

Restrictions

  • You can work in any lawful job for two years, but cannot work as a professional sportsperson, a doctor in training, or set yourself up in business.
  • You must leave the UK at the end of your two year visa.
  • If you would like to apply for a Tier 1 (highly skilled) or Tier 2 (sponsorship) visa, you will have to do so from your home country.
  • Youth Mobility Scheme visa holders will be allowed to stay in the U.K. for 2 years and WORK in any lawful job for the FULL 2 YEARS.
