Teacher recruitment continues to pose problems for UK schools and Australian teachers often ask why. There is no short answer and teacher demand remains high for a number of reasons:

  • The inability to attract sufficient students to teacher training courses
  • The incidence of teacher retirement associated with an ageing workforce
  • A strong economy provides work options in other fields for teachers
  • Long term recruitment problems in London associated with housing costs

In addition to needing teachers to cover emergency and casual vacancies, UK schools also require contract and permanent staff to meet the shortfall in their ongoing staffing demands.

The density of population within the Greater London area leads to a particularly high demand for teachers.  Fortunately, many of our Australian teachers are actively seeking work in the capital.  However, schools across the UK, particularly in the South East of England, also experience difficulties in recruiting good teachers.

  • Register your details and submit your resume
  • Contact you to discuss and formulate an action plan to meet your specific requirements
  • Complete all necessary documentation and reference checks
  • Offer advice on suitable working visa categories and work permit sponsorship
  • Search for suitable UK school contract vacancies on your behalf or arrange casual relief teaching opportunities on your arrival in the UK.
  • Discuss the merits of individual vacancies with you.
  • Facilitate telephone interviews with UK head teachers and schools.
  • Assist with the management of your move to the UK.

Make an action plan!

Your decision to travel will be based on many factors, but there are some important issues that you should take into consideration.

Do I want the flexibility of working as a casual relief teacher or would I rather secure something more long term? Whatever you decide there are still plenty of options open to you.

Essentially there is a constant demand for casual relief teachers throughout the year, with a fall of in demand in the latter stages of the summer term (June/July). This is supplemented by a demand for contract and permanent staff at the beginning of the academic year in September and the start of term two in January.

  • Contracts commencing in September – Interviews take place in May/June
  • Contracts commencing in January – Interviews take place in October/November

It is essential for those teachers interested in contract positions to submit their details as soon as possible, in order for referencing to be completed.
